What you walk away with

A blowup can cost a job, a lease, or a friendship in about thirty seconds. This class is about catching it before that.

  • The difference between anger, which is a feeling, aggression, which is a behavior, and hostility, which is an attitude
  • The anger meter: a 1 to 10 scale you use to catch yourself before 10
  • The four kinds of warning signs your body and mind send first
  • An anger control plan you write yourself, with tools for the moment and tools that stop the buildup
  • A way to say what you need without blowing up or backing down
  • A certificate with your name on it, signed by our executive director

The eight modules

Each one is a short video followed by a quiz. You need 80 percent on every quiz to earn the certificate.

  1. What anger is (and isn’t)

Anger is a feeling. Aggression is a behavior. When anger becomes a problem, four myths about it, and the 1 to 10 anger meter you use through the whole class.

  2. Events and cues

What actually sets you off, and the four kinds of warning signs your body and mind send before you hit a 10.

  3. Your anger control plan

Build your toolbox: the timeout, deep breathing, and the people you can call. Includes a short guided breathing exercise.

  4. The aggression cycle

Buildup, explosion, aftermath. How to break the cycle early, plus a short muscle relaxation exercise.

  5. Change the thought

It is rarely the event. It is what you tell yourself about it. How to catch the thought and argue with it.

  6. Say it straight

Aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive. A five step way to handle a problem with someone without blowing up or backing down.

  7. Where you learned it

How the people who raised you handled anger and what carried over. Every question in this module is optional.

  8. Your plan, finished

A review of every tool in the class and your written anger control plan, done.

Who this is for

Young people in and aging out of foster care, and anyone who has been told their temper is a problem at work, at home, or with the people they live with. Also the staff and caregivers who end up in those conversations.

This course teaches skills. It is not a substitute for counseling. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself or someone else, call or text 988 any time, or tell your Angels Nest staff right away.
